Fat Loss Phase While Breastfeeding

Sep 06, 2023

Can you go into a fat loss phase while breastfeeding?

The answer is yes!

(Now I would 100% recommend working with a fitness professional/coach who is certified in pre/postnatal so you can do this safely and monitor milk supply!)

I’m going to go into detail on how I prepared for my postpartum fat loss journey with plans to breastfeed because this is not just something you go into blindly.

As many know you are supposed to increase calories by a couple hundred in the second and third trimester. I started a slow reverse starting in my third trimester to get myself prepared for the increase in calories I was going to need postpartum for breastfeeding. I did this slowly to avoid digestion issues and to be able to get calories up pretty high.

When going into a fat loss phase you have to be in a calorie deficit so I built up my calories to be able to cut my calories but still be eating a good amount of calories so I could keep my milk supply up. For example, I am in a calorie deficit and eating 2,500 calories a day.

The first 2 months postpartum I DID NOT cut my calories. I focused on recovery first which is what is needed for every woman having a baby. High protein and lots of calories. Lots of fast snacks and easy meals to get you through those first weeks of being a mom. Once I started feeling better, sleeping more, feeling more recovered is when I put myself in a calorie deficit. Again, I highly recommend working with a coach so you can do this safely.

Even though I was very eager to drop the fat I waited until I felt most comfortable doing so!! I also monitored my milk supply and if I felt hungrier on a certain day I allowed myself to go over in calories. I knew this journey was not going to be easy or fast and that has been A-OK with me because I wanted to do it the most healthy and sustainable way and I am glad I have the knowledge to do so!

I am 6 months postpartum and down 30 pounds! My milk supply is still great and I’m planning to drop a little more fat and then reverse diet again for a little and then go into maintenance and sustain my results.
